Stuttgart’s tennis fans already looking forward to seeing Justine Henin

Stuttgart. What a comeback: Justine Henin provided stiff opposition for the world No. 1 Serena Williams in the final of the Australian Open before eventually going down in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 2-6. After the great performance, spectators at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix will also be hoping to see the Belgian back in Stuttgart where she won the title in 2007.

“We’re in close contact with Justine and we’re hoping she’ll play here,” said Tournament Director Markus Günthardt, who is confident of being able to present another top star in the Porsche Arena from 24 April to May 2. “Justine’s favourite surface is clay and she’ll no doubt be looking to concentrate fully on the French Open. Our tournament would therefore be the ideal preparation.”

For Serena Williams, the win in Melbourne was her fifth at the Australian Open and her 12th career Grand Slam title. Only five players have been more successful. These include Steffi Graf, Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova, whose six titles at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix are a record. One day before meeting Justine Henin in the memorable final, Serena Williams also won the doubles alongside her sister Venus who is one of the seven top ten players to have already signed up for the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix.

“Justine made it really hard for me today. I’d like to congratulate her on her fantastic performance and it’s great having her back” said Serena Williams after her win. Justine Henin commented, “They were two very emotional weeks for me. I never thought I’d ever enjoy playing tennis so much.”

It is a good sign for Markus Günthardt. “I’m sure she’ll be giving tennis her all again. She was playing as if she’d never been away. That she’s come back is wonderful for women’s tennis,” he said and promised: “We’ll be doing our utmost to get her to come to Stuttgart. We know our spectators are already looking forward to seeing Justine.”
